Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Create an oval in SketchUp.

    Be sure to extend the interior one almost to the other side of it. , At some point during the deletion, you may have some blank areas.

    Use the pencil tool and draw a line to fill it back in. , This will be the profile on one side of the oval.

    Use the eraser tool to erase all of that particular surface except for the half circle. ,, This will be the lid.

    Erase the parts you don't need. , Use the Pencil tool to be sure the surface is complete and delete the part that you don't need. , Click on View >> Hidden Geometry. , You will need to do them separately. , Right click on it then select Intersect Faces >> With Model.

    This will help you get the edges where the model intersects with itself. , Sometimes, you will need to retrace your steps to get it to look right.
  2. Step 2: Select View >> Hidden Geometry.

  3. Step 3: Select and delete the top of the oval.

  4. Step 4: Click on the Push/pull tool

  5. Step 5: hold down CTRL

  6. Step 6: and extend one of the panels out from the oval on both sides.

  7. Step 7: Use the Eraser tool and delete all but two of the vertical surfaces.

  14. Step 14: Turn off the (formerly) hidden indicators so that they are hidden again.

  15. Step 15: Select the bottom surface (path) and then click on the profiles that you created.

  16. Step 16: Select the entire object.

  17. Step 17: Start erasing parts of the lid that don't belong there.
