Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Insert the floppy disk into the computer.

    All down to personal preference but the 'Express Setup' was used for this tutorial. ,, You will be able to install the hardware at a later date if you cannot find the installation disk for that hardware there and then. , This is all down to personal preference but the CD was chosen in this tutorial. ,, For this tutorial, we only have the unpartitioned space so we'll select that. , Formatting it as FAT will make it easier to transfer files to and from Windows 9x systems. , Normally, it is recommended to install Windows in the location Windows recommends. , If you have the setup CD inserted into the computer, leave it in. , It may choose the operating system without your consent at this point (options appear on screen for less than a second in some cases).

    This is nothing to worry about. ,,, Type any name as long as it is different to your Name and Company. ,,, If there is a printer attached to your computer, this page is dedicated to getting it set up.

    In this tutorial, no printer was connected so Cancel was pressed.

  2. Step 2: Start the computer.

  3. Step 3: Insert the 2nd floppy disk and press Enter.

  4. Step 4: Press ↵ Enter.

  5. Step 5: Choose which setup method you would like to use.

  9. Step 9: Choose whether to install from a CD-ROM or floppy disk.

  11. Step 11: Choose which partitioning to install Windows on by using the arrow keys then pressing ↵ Enter.

  12. Step 12: Select which file system you would like to format the hard drive as using the arrow keys and press ↵ Enter.. All down to personal preference but NTFS was chosen in the tutorial.

  13. Step 13: Select where to install Windows and press ↵ Enter.

  14. Step 14: Remove any floppy disks inserted into the computer and press ↵ Enter to restart the computer.

  15. Step 15: Make sure "Windows NT Workstation Version 3.51 is highlighted and press ↵ Enter.

  16. Step 16: Type in your Name and (optional) a Company name and either click Continue or press ↵ Enter.

  17. Step 17: Confirm that the details you typed in are correct and then click Continue.

  18. Step 18: Type in a 'Computer Name' and click Continue.

  19. Step 19: Confirm that the Computer Name you typed in is correct and click Continue.

  20. Step 20: Choose your language from the drop box and click Continue.

  21. Step 21: Set up your printer if required.

  22. Step 22: Click OK to continue.

  23. Step 23: If you want to have a network connection

  24. Step 24: insert a network adapter into the computer and click Detect.

  25. Step 25: To install a remote network

  26. Step 26: click Remote.

  27. Step 27: If you have a network adapter card installed on the computer

  28. Step 28: select the appropriate card from the drop down menu and click Continue.

  29. Step 29: Click OK to not install a network otherwise click Cancel.

  30. Step 30: Type in your password and confirm your password and then click Continue.

  31. Step 31: Choose to create a 'local account' if desired.

  32. Step 32: Click OK if you don't want to set up a 'local account otherwise click Cancel.

  33. Step 33: If confronted with this message about "EDIT.COM"

  34. Step 34: make sure to highlight "MS-DOS Editor" and click Continue.

  35. Step 35: Ensure the Date and Time are set correctly and click OK.

  36. Step 36: Click OK to continue.

  37. Step 37: Ensure all your display settings are correctly set and click OK.

  38. Step 38: Create an Emergency Repair disk if desired.

  39. Step 39: Remove all floppy disks from the computer and click Restart Computer.

  40. Step 40: Ensure "Windows NT Workstation Version 3.51" is highlighted and press Enter.

  41. Step 41: Ensure "Windows NT Workstation Version 3.51" is highlighted and press Enter.

  42. Step 42: Press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys.

  43. Step 43: Type in your 'Username' and 'Password' and click OK.

  44. Step 44: Setup is now complete.
