Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Paint the top half of the polystyrene balls gold using the small brush.

Two thin coats are better than one thick, so it won't look great at first, don't panic! While they dry, find a circular hollow to rest them so they don't roll about.

Leave to dry completely. ,, If it looks streaky, don't worry, it will look a lot more even when dry!, You can find a picture of a snitch on Google and copy out the wing, but don't worry about making it very precise, as long as it is the right sort of shape.

The only important bit is to make sure the wing is in scale with your polystyrene balls! You can see this in a picture, but roughly the wing should be twice as long as the ball is wide.,, On the cartridge paper draw around the wing 6 times- these are the right wings of your six snitches (you will flip them over so they face the opposite way), These are the left wings., Make sure these are attached to the wings., This is a long job, but cutting neatly will make the wings look so more better, so it is worth spending time on the frilled edges to make a feathered look., Fold the square tab at the base in half, and then flip the wing over so that the side where you have drawn around the template is facing the back.

Use a pin to attach the folded tab to the body and then fold the wings over so they stick out from the body.

Repeat with the wing for the other side., You can now hang the ribbon by knotting it around or pinning it to whatever you want them to hang off.
  2. Step 2: When dry

  3. Step 3: paint the bottom halves and leave to dry again.

  4. Step 4: Repeat with a second coat so no white is showing through.

  5. Step 5: While drying

  6. Step 6: draw the left wing of a snitch onto the piece of stiff cardboard (I used the back of a cereal box for this).

  7. Step 7: Cut the wing out of the cardboard

  8. Step 8: being careful as you shape the ends of the feathers (a frilled edge will look loads better than a smooth one!)

  9. Step 9: This is your template.

  10. Step 10: Flip over the cardboard template so it becomes a right wing and draw around it 6 times.

  11. Step 11: At the side of each wing where it will join the body of the snitch

  12. Step 12: draw a small square tab so that you can pin it to the body.

  13. Step 13: Cut out each wing

  14. Step 14: making sure the tab is attached.

  15. Step 15: When the polystyrene balls are completely dry

  16. Step 16: attach the wings.

  17. Step 17: Do this for all 6 balls until they all have two wings. Then cut 6 lengths of ribbon (how long you make the ribbon depends on how far down you want the snitches to hang) Pin one end of the ribbon to the tops of the snitches and you're done!
