Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Access the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services at www.jfs.ohio.gov.

    This includes name, address, driver's license number, employment history, reason for unemployment and information about any dependents.

    Note that additional information is required if you had a job with the federal government, were employed in another state or were in the military.

  2. Step 2: Click on the "How to Apply for Unemployment" link under the "Jobs" heading in the left-hand column.

  3. Step 3: Go to the online unemployment filing system by clicking on the appropriate link.

  4. Step 4: Register by clicking on the "Create a New Account" link under the "Unemployed Workers" heading in the left-hand column.

  5. Step 5: Click on "I Agree" after the Release of Information statement.

  6. Step 6: Enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) and Social Security number

  7. Step 7: and then click Login.

  8. Step 8: Supply all required information.

  9. Step 9: Call the toll-free number indicated on the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services website to file a new claim or for assistance if needed.

  10. Step 10: Follow the appropriate prompts in the automated message after calling the toll-free number.

  11. Step 11: Receive a first notice of unemployment compensation eligibility and a second notice noting qualification status in the mail.

  12. Step 12: Wait about 4 weeks to receive your first unemployment check if your unemployment claim has been approved.
