How to Run a Chkdsk Function

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Click the Start button.

    Select Computer or My Computer.

    This will open a list of all your drives.

    Locate the drive you wish to check for errors.
  2. Step 2: Right-click the drive icon.

    Select Properties from the menu.

    In the new window, select the Tools tab.

    These are basic hard drive tools.

    Error-checking runs the chkdsk operation.

    Click Check Now… , You can decide if you want chkdsk to fix errors and recover bad sectors.

    If you check either box, and you are trying to scan the hard drive that your operating system uses, then it will prompt you to restart.

    If you do, chkdsk will launch before Windows starts.

    You must be logged in as an Administrator.
