Step 1: Start by walking your horse (in only its halter and with a lead) down a quiet road (where only one to three cars will pass per hour).
Go 15 minutes down the road and 15 minutes back.
Let the horse stop and sniff things if they are nervous.
You want them to get used to these things before you try riding past them. , At this point don't let the horse sniff things, just make them keep going. , Some horses will automatically change their mood just because the saddle is on their back. , Mount your horse at the spot they are calmest (sometimes it's best to mount at the place you turn around). ,, You can try making your horse jog or trot heading away from home. , Never canter or gallop home (see Warnings below). , Your horse should now be getting used to passing cars and shouldn't freak out too much when they drive by. , It is handy to have someone come with you with a companion horse to help calm your horse down. -
