Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Click on the selection tool.
Right click on it and choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool. -
Step 2: Hold down the ⇧ Shift key and then select where you want the circle to start.
Drag the cursor until it is the proper size. , The shift key will keep it perfectly round. ,,,,, Do this a few times, until you get a nice strong shade. ,, This will help with the illusion of 3D. , Put it under the sphere. ,, Change the feather to about 20 or so.
It will depend upon how big your primary circle is. , If you think 20 is too much, you can go back (Ctrl+Z) and then change it to a smaller number. -
Step 3: Release the mouse before you release the ⇧ Shift key.

Step 4: Fill the foreground with a middle gray color using the bucket tool.

Step 5: Select the Burn tool.

Step 6: Choose a soft edged brush

Step 7: approximately half of the radius of your gray circle you have created.

Step 8: Set the Range to Midtones and the Exposure to 50% (unless you are using a pressure sensitive tablet).

Step 9: Draw around the sides of the sphere

Step 10: as seen in the screenshot.

Step 11: Switch to the Dodge tool to add a highlight to the sphere.

Step 12: lighten the bottom

Step 13: as seen in the screenshot.

Step 14: Click on the Elliptical Marquee Tool again

Step 15: but this time

Step 16: don't make it perfectly round.

Step 17: Change the foreground to black.

Step 18: Go to Selection >> Modify >> Feather.

Step 19: Go to the layer with the sphere

Step 20: and in the part of the circle selection under the sphere
